Canada Updates Travel Requirements for Mexican Citizens

The Canadian government has announced revised travel requirements for Mexican citizens traveling to Canada, aimed at maintaining the integrity of the immigration system while easing travel for eligible individuals.

Key Changes

  • Electronic Travel Authorization (eTA): Effective immediately, Mexican citizens who hold a valid US non-immigrant visa or have held a Canadian visa in the past 10 years will now be eligible to apply for an eTA instead of a traditional visitor visa when traveling to Canada by air.
  • Visitor Visa Still Required: Mexican citizens who do not qualify for an eTA must still apply for a Canadian visitor visa.
  • Work and Study Permits: The application process for Mexican citizens seeking work or study permits remains unchanged.

Why the Changes?

The Canadian government cites a rise in the number of asylum claims from Mexican citizens, many of which are ultimately refused, withdrawn, or abandoned, as the reason behind these adjustments. The updated policy aims to balance ease of travel with the need to manage immigration flows and protect social services.

Building on Canada-Mexico Relations

Despite these changes, Canada still values its strong relationship with Mexico:

  • Supporting Legitimate Travel: Canada welcomes Mexican workers, students, visitors, and immigrants who contribute to the Canadian economy and society.
  • Expanding Visa Centers: Canada is increasing its network of visa application centers within Mexico to better support clients.
  • Modernizing Seasonal Agricultural Worker Program (SAWP): Opportunities are being explored to expand this mutually beneficial program, offering more avenues for Mexican workers.

What Mexican Citizens Need to Know

  • If you have a valid US non-immigrant visa or a Canadian visa issued within the past 10 years, you may be eligible for an eTA.
  • If you don't qualify for an eTA, you'll need to apply for a visitor visa.
  • Check the Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC) website for details: [invalid URL removed]

Important Note: eTAs issued to Mexican passports before 11:30 p.m. Eastern time on February 29, 2024, will be invalid for travel, except those linked to valid work or study permits.

Canada remains committed to working with Mexico to facilitate legitimate travel, promote safe and managed migration, and provide protection to those in need.
